So you’re all set and done. You have made up your mind you want to grow some of your own good old Mary jane and you have the equipment sorted, now comes the dilemma, there are so many beautiful, delicious cannabis seeds to choose from where do we even start?
Well this task may seem daunting at times, however, worry not my fellow smoker, we are here to help you!
Autoflowering Cannabis Seeds
The first thing to consider when trying to choose the right cannabis seeds would be experience, I would say beginner growers should stay away from regular and feminized seeds and focus more on Autoflowering seeds. Autoflowering seeds have an ingrained system designed to flower over time( approximately 10-12 weeks) so unless you manage to kill the flower, there is not much you can mess up and you will get your delicious flowers in a much shorter time.
There is this stigma regarding Autoflowering seeds that the quality or the yield may be significantly less, even though up to a point you can manipulate feminized or regular seeds to grow more as they have no biological clock, today marijuana growers have focused so much on improving their Autoflowering product that this stigma is almost obsolete. The thing with Autoflowering plants is that you cannot really stress the plants out much so training options would be limited.

Auto Orange Bud has a very strong pungent citrus dominant terpene profile that smells like orange and mandarin

Feminized Cannabis Seeds
More experienced growers may tend to prefer feminized seeds, these are just like regular seeds, however, growers have manipulated them so that they all (or almost all) turn out to be female plants ensuring your plants produce beautiful, juicy buds. They do tend to take slightly longer to flower than autoflowering plants to fully grow but the yields a feminized plant is able to produce are incredible! In order for these to flower you will need to change your light schedule to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.

Regular Cannabis Seeds
Regular seeds are regular cannabis seeds generally found at a cheaper price. If your goal in growing cannabis is to produce a male plant so that you can create your seeds or your strains/genetics then this is the way to go. These seeds have in no way been genetically modified and you have a 50/50 chance of getting a male vs a female. If your goal is for your plants to produce immediate beautiful buds, then your best bet may be to focus on autoflowering and feminized strains.
Outdoor vs Indoor
The next thing to consider when choosing your seeds would be whether you want to grow them outdoors or indoors. Even though many plants are famous for thriving in both outdoor vs indoor scenarios there are some plants which are designed to do well in a particular one. Why not get the best you possibly can I say?
If you are looking to grow your plants outdoors, I would recommend staying away from Autoflowering seeds. These plants have a shorter time to flower than regular cannabis seeds meaning they probably will not get enough hours of light every day. Auto-flowering plants are known to thrive indoors with an 18/6 or 20/4 light-darkness schedule.
Feminized strains are known to do particularly well outdoors producing higher yields. If you have your own space outside like a discreet yard or a field I would say these are the ones to go for however, if you don’t, you might be better off growing autos or you might consider guerrilla growing.
How to know if your seed is going to survive
Although there is technically no way to tell whether your seed will survive, an easy way to test would be to put the seed into a glass of water. If the seed sinks it most likely will survive, if the seed floats, the probability is it will not survive. This is not a sure fire way to tell but I found it to be very effective.
